Damaging decibels
Noise is the most common hazard we face every day, and most people don’t recognize the danger. Exposure to 85 decibels (a measure of sound) can cause permanent damage to the ears.
- Most conversation occurs at 60 decibels; this is safe.
- Gas-powered lawn mowers and leaf blowers produce 80-85 decibels, this is damaging after just a few hours of exposure.
- Heavy equipment idles at 85 decibels, which is also a level that can damage hearing permanently.
- A single gunshot can produce 140-190 decibels, enough to cause permanent damage quickly.
Custom earmolds
Custom earmolds can be solid or soft. They can be full shell to completely fill the ear, or half-shell to allow more room. Talk to the Hearing Wellness Centre about your work or play environment and we can recommend the hearing protection that meets your needs.
If you still need to communicate while wearing hearing protection (such as when hunting or working) we can fit you with earmolds with a filtered attenuator. This protects against damaging decibels while still allowing you to hear speech.
Custom earplugs
Unlike earmolds, which are worn in the ear, earplugs are worn in the ear canal only. Custom earplugs are made to fit your ear canal and are worn more comfortably for longer periods of time. Small handles or cords make removing earplugs easy.
Earplugs are also worn by people that need a quiet environment to sleep. Swimmers wear special earplugs to keep out water and prevent ear infections. Here are just a few styles available at Hearing Wellness Centre:

Digital hearing protection
Digital earplugs and earmolds can combine hearing protection with ambient noise amplification. Hunters and shooters benefit from hearing the noise around them while protecting their hearing from gunfire. Digital hearing protection is also available for musicians to allow them to hear voices and music without damaging amplification. Hearing Protection Products We Offer Include:
Hunting:
Hunting, shooting and sudden noise. A filter instantaneously closes when damaging noise levels are reached. Allows essentially normal hearing at all other times.
Music:
Ideal for performing musicians and concert-goers. Also great for flight attendants, bartenders, waiters, dental professionals. Allows wearer to hear sounds accurately, but at reduced levels. Three filter options available: 9dB, 15dB or 25dB.
Swimming:
For swimming and showering – and they FLOAT! Also provide superb noise reduction.
Sleep:
Offers comfortable and uninterrupted rest. Also great for shift workers with non-traditional hours.
Motorsport:
Designed with a hollow canal for under helmet use to reduce wind buffeting.
Surf:
Designed to prevent surfer’s ear and swimmer’s ear caused by exposure to cold water and wind. The floatable material is molded with a sealed membrane spanning the sound bore that keeps cold water and air out of the ear canal, but allows for conversation and hearing while in the ear.
Occupational:
Ideal for high-noise industrial environments.

For use with any bud/button style earphones.
DefendEar 1:
Amplification for situational awareness, as well as noise attenuation when you pull the trigger.
DefendEar 2:
Offers two modes, game, which is optimized for intermittent shots, and clay mode, which is optimized for continued shots.
