Hearing Aid Batteries

Your hearing aids are powered by zinc-air replaceable or lithium ion rechargeable batteries. During your hearing aid fitting, the specialists at the Hearing Wellness Centre will show you how to change or recharge your batteries. Battery life depends on the unit you wear and your wearing habits. It’s important to always have fresh batteries on hand, so you are never left without power.

Disposable battery types

The hearing aids you wear are powered by a specific battery size. If you use an app with your hearing aids, it will warn you when the battery power is low. Some hearing aids emit a chirping sound to notify you about the low battery status. Battery life varies from user to user and device to device. The four most common sizes are:

  • Orange (#13): These batteries power behind-the-ear (BTE) and in-the-ear (ITE) devices. They usually last up to 240 hours.
  • Brown (#312): This is the smallest battery available. It is used for hearing aids worn in the canal (ITC) or completely in canal (CIC). It lasts about 175 hours.
  • Yellow (#10): Like the brown battery, the small yellow battery powers smaller hearing aids like ITC and CIC devices. However, this battery has a shorter life at about 80 hours.
  • Blue (#675): The largest battery has the longest life and is used to power bigger hearing aids. Blue batteries last about 300 hours in BTE or ITE hearing aids.

Rechargeable batteries

Some hearing aids get their power from rechargeable batteries. These hearing aids must be returned to their charging station each night, so they will provide a full day’s worth of use the next day.

If your rechargeable batteries are not fully recharging or if you do not get a full day’s use from a charge, bring your devices into the Hearing Wellness Centre for a check. Some devices with rechargeable batteries can also be used with disposable batteries.

Extending battery life

To get the most life from your disposable batteries follow these tips:

  • Always wait a few minutes after pulling the tab from a new battery before installing in your hearing aid
  • Keep hearing aids dry as exposure to moisture decreases battery life.
  • Store hearing aids at night with the battery door open.
  • Keep hearing aids and extra batteries in a cool and dry place.
